What is a Japanese Toilet Seat?

If you've ever been to Japan, you know the Japanese come from a very clean culture. And what better way to stay clean, than to use water to clean yourself? A Japanese toilet seat (also known as a bidet toilet seat) is an electronic toilet seat that uses water to wash you after using the restroom.  But they come with a lot of other features too such as:

  • Built in water heater
  • Warm air dryer
  • Heated toilet seat
  • Auto open/close lid
  • Night light

Japanese toilet seats can be found all throughout Japan. They are in approximately 80% of homes and are also very common in hotels, restaurants, train stations, and other public places. It's activated by pressing the WASH button on the control panel (or remote control). This will extend a wash nozzle beneath you and start the wash feature. When done washing, press the STOP button – the wash nozzle will then rinse itself off and retract back into the toilet seat. Nothing touches you except water.

There are several advantages of using a Japanese toilet seat. For one, using water to wash yourself is certainly more effective and more hygienic than using dry toilet paper. Did you know toilet paper is dyed to make it white in color, and often contains perfumes and other chemicals? Not to mention it's abrasive. Using a refreshing stream of water is the best way to clean your body. Water is also a lot more comfortable. And because these high-tech toilet seats come equipped with a warm air dryer, it can be a totally hands-free experience.

Since these models reduce toilet paper usage, they're also eco-friendly.  Check out our bidetsPLUS Infographic to learn about the impact toilet paper has on our environment.

Easy to install, these seats are designed for Do It Yourself (DIY) installation.  Just remove your old toilet seat, and attach your new bidet seat. It taps into the water supply which refills your toilet so there's no additional plumbing to install. These seats do require electricity though, so you’ll need to plug it into a nearby outlet.

Our customers all rave about their new Japanese toilet seats - try one and you will too!

Bio Bidet BB 2000

  • Bio Bidet BB 2000
    Bio Bidet BB 2000

Our first Japanese toilet seat recommendation is one of our best-selling models, the Bio Bidet BB-2000.  This is a full-featured Japanese-style toilet, operated with a wireless remote control which most people mount on the wall next to their toilet. The BB 2000 has both posterior and feminine wash features, and you can adjust the position of the spray nozzle to best fit your body.  You can also adjust the water temperature and water pressure through the wireless remote control.  Other features include a temperature-controlled heated seat, air dryer, air deodorizer, night light, and an eco-mode which decreases this Japanese bidet seat’s energy consumption.

Brondell Swash 1400

    Brondell Swash 1400

Also for your consideration is the Brondell Swash 1400 (also operated with a wireless remote control).  The Brondell Swash 1400 has some of the latest technology available in a Japanese toilet seat.  Similar to the Bio Bidet BB 2000, the Brondell Swash 1400 comes with stainless steel wash nozzles.  The Brondell Swash 1400 also has adjustable spray-width controls - this feature lets you choose between a more narrow, concentrated spray or a wider, softer spray.  Other unique features of the Swash 1400 include a nozzle sterilization feature and a lid you can sit on.  The Brondell Swash 1400 has also been recently re-designed so this Japanese toilet seat is more compact which gives a cleaner, more modern look.

    TOTO S550e

And finally, if you have a little more to spend for a premium-class Japanese toilet seat, then we would recommend the TOTO S550e (also operated with a wireless remote control).  The TOTO S550e is the world's thinnest bidet seat - measuring just over 4" high at its tallest point in the rear.  In addition to its wash features, this TOTO washlet has an automatic opening and closing lid which is activated when you approach the toilet.  eWater Technology uses electrolyzed water to mist your bowl and helps reduce the need for harsh chemical cleaners.  The S550e washlet is equipped with a night light as well, which makes it more convenient to use in the middle of the night.
